Igbo Tradition and Christianity

"Igbos took up Christianity because it was so similar to their traditional religion "

I call bullshit

If as a Christian , someone came to you today and told you they are here to bring the good news, would you open your arms ? Would you allow them in your house ? Would you eat , drink , and be merry with them if they told you the Jesus you worship is barbaric and false ? Would you believe them if they told you there were many gods and not one creator ? If they threw away your holy water and anointing oil , would you sit there passively ? If they told you the bible is wrong and man and women are equal , would you buy it ? If they told you it is not good for one woman to have only one man , would you accept it ? If they told you that their God created human beings to have free will and do as they please, would you accept it ? If they told you it was Adam and Steve , Adam and Eve , Eve and Ana , Adams, and Eves , would you agree to it ?

So why would you believe such a revisionist history of religion that occurred through force ,domination and eventually acceptance ? Why would you believe that missionaries and colonialists came in peace to share the good news after they destroyed whole communities and exploited your land? You wouldn't readily give up your religion today for a new one so why would you believe that your ancestors would ?

I'm sure some did. Many people gleefully took up Christianity because they saw it as an avenue for opportunity. But many more resisted . Many more died. Many more were exploited. Many more were destroyed. Many more were ostracized.

When you teach generations of people that they are a passive people , they eventually begin to believe it . This is the process of colonization . When the colonial subjects believe that colonialism was good and beneficial while they simultaneously suffer from its implications.

  2. Religion is inherited, regional and a social construct so therefore there can't be one true religion, just different expressions of an inherent truth of a greater being.
